This GIS Intern position supports NEMAC’s project with North Carolina’s Geological Survey developing geospatial-based products related to landslides in western North Carolina. This includes updating existing GIS-based StoryMaps, assisting with the conversion of existing GIS viewers to a new platform using Expereince Builder, and preparing GIS data to be displayed in ArcGIS Online web maps. Responsibilities will include the backup of content, maps, graphics, and images to be reassembled in the new GIS viewer. They could also include spatial data retrieval, management, and processing, and could possibly include some spatial analysis and modeling. The intern will also assist with creating map products and assisting with final reporting and data dissemination. Depending on future funding, the intern could also assist with the development of a landslide early warning system. This internship will start in January 2026. NEMAC internships are ongoing, flexible, and may continue until graduation as funding allows. They are also reserved for current UNCA students only. All NEMAC internships require that the student provide a monthly report documenting tasks, accomplishments, and challenges, submitted regularly for mentor evaluation.
