The SkillSet Program is the community outreach program of UNCA's STEAM Studio. We teach kids how to use woodworking equipment, welding equipment, and digital tools both on campus and at partner organizations. We offer after school programs, summer camps, one-day workshops, and mentorship opportunities for folks age 8 and up! (Yes, even adults.) We primarily serve under-resourced communities, female-identified, and gender expansive students to help bridge the gender gap in STEAM fields and trades, and create excitement and curiosity around these fields, no matter your identity! This summer, we are looking for student workers to assist with teaching STEAM classes to elementary, middle school, and high school students. We will be teaching classes both at the STEAM studio, and on-location at area schools. Transportation is provided when we teach outside the studio. Training begins the week of May 19, and programming runs until August 1. Work shifts are 35-40 hours a week. Summer camp is Monday- Friday 8:45am - 4:15pm. Additional training hours will also be available. Please state your availability in your application. Helpers will teach, assist, and be positive role models to curious and energetic youth age 8 and up. The student participants learn to weld, woodwork, and use digital tools, and we guide that process! Training is provided, however, it is preferred that students have experience in woodworking, welding, or digital fabrication from UNCA classes. More information about SkillSet can be found here.
