Job Description

The U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit (toolkit.climate.gov) is a national-level website managed by NOAA’s Climate Program Office and NEMAC. This website provides scientific tools, information, and expertise to help communities manage their climate-related risks and strengthen their capacity to build resilience to extreme events. Federal governmental cross-agency teams have identified and provided content on climate change impacts and adaptive responses for several sectors and geographic regions. Additionally, the teams have identified case studies that describe how communities are taking action to build climate resilience, along with the data, tools, options, and training used to implement resilience strategies. This position will help write, maintain and curate content for our audience of practitioners, decision-makers, and community leaders.

This internship will start in the Fall semester, could possibly be extended into the Spring 2027 semester, and allows for the project to be completed remotely or in NEMAC’s office. NEMAC internships are ongoing, flexible, and may continue until graduation as funding allows. They are also reserved for current UNCA students only. All NEMAC internships require that the student provide a monthly report documenting tasks, accomplishments, and challenges, submitted regularly for mentor evaluation. Required Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

Required Skills

Strong writing, editing, reading comprehension, and communication skills
Experience writing for a nontechnical audience
Proven ability to work with a team, as well as work individually with guidance from a mentor
Completion of classes in Creative Writing, Scientific/Technical Writing, or Mass Communications, or equivalent experience
Experience using shared documents via Google Drive
Prior experience with a web-based content management system, such as Drupal, WordPress, or similar

Desired Skills

Experience with design platforms such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva, or similar
Experience writing narratives based on environmental data, with some background in either environmental, atmospheric, or climate science

Technical Skills

Copywriting, Editing, Storyboarding, Writing Articles

Soft Skills

Attention to Detail, Creativity and Innovation, Nonverbal Communication, Team Collaboration
