These positions are for in-lab teaching assistants. These TAs assist the professor and students during the lab experience.
Specific obligations include:
- Being on-time and present for all lab sessions.
- Reading laboratory experiments at least one day in advance of meeting with students.
- Explaining, practicing, monitoring, and enforcing safety rules. Comply with chemical hygiene and safety regulations established by the Department.
- Maintaining a professional, positive, and productive attitude. Be approachable and enthusiastic about mentoring and working with other students. Be an effective leader and maintain authority in the classroom or laboratory. Treat all students equally and fairly.
- Encouraging student participation and development by asking questions and leading discussions that promote problem solving, critical reasoning, and independent thinking.
- Reporting issues related to equipment, maintenance or any other problems to stockroom personnel or the lab manager.
At least one semester of chemistry is necessary, and the applicant must have had a particular lab (or equivalent) before being its TA, with exceptions for interdisciplinary labs.
