Position Description Bike Mechanics are responsible for inventory, organization, and repair for all bikes. Bike Mechanics may also develop and put on repair clinics during slow seasons, and support bike-related trips and trip leaders as needed. This position both works within existing systems to ensure smooth operation of repairs and processes, and also provides opportunity for staff to work with the Bike Shop supervisor to undertake projects to improve the Bike Shop. The position requires staff to take initiative, as there will not always be bike repairs that are within the mechanics skill level. An important part of this position is initiation teaching other staff that are less experienced, when available. Mechanics need to be able to find ways to contribute to the bike shop if they don’t have repairs or are not teaching other staff, such as cleaning and organizing.
This position reports to the Assistant Director of Outdoor Programs. This position is compensated according to the Student Affairs Wage Chart. The weekly hours of this position should range from 2-8 hours per week. This position will not exceed 20 hours per week. Expectations of all Outdoor Programs Employees: Represent Campus Recreation Outdoor Programs in a positive manner while working and while on campus. Attend all scheduled meetings, appointments, and trainings. Responsible for giving 24 hours notice if unable to attend. Responsible for finding substitute coverage for any shifts that you are unable to attend. Wear Campus Recreation staff shirt and name tag at all times while working. Read and reply to email communications within 48 hours. Keep When to Work and Google Calendar up to date with availability. Submit Timesheet bi-weekly by Sunday at 10 p.m.. Meet semesterly with Assistant Director for Student Staff Employment Evaluation. Do not play, study, read, or work out while you are working.
Duties and Responsibilities of Bike Mechanic: Daily: Check repair log and work on bikes needed attention If there are no repairs in the repair log, or the repairs are beyond the skills of the mechanic, the following tasks include: Teaching another staff bike mechanic skills, if their daily duties have been completed and the shop is empty of renters. Organizing the shop areas in the shop Cleaning up areas of the shop Diagnosing and working on bikes unusable bikes in the shop Using online resources to learn about a specific repair or skill is encouraged if that information is applicable during that shift.
