Job Description

This GIS Intern position supports NEMAC’s project with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and NOAA, and will assist other NEMAC GIS staff members through data acquisition, processing, analysis, modeling, mapping, and reporting in the development of a Coastal Resilience Assessment for all U.S. coastlines. Responsibilities include spatial data retrieval and management, geoprocessing and analysis, basic spatial modeling, creating map products, and assisting with final reporting and data dissemination.

This internship will start in January 2026. NEMAC internships are ongoing, flexible, and may continue until graduation as funding allows. They are also reserved for current UNCA students only. All NEMAC internships require that the student provide a monthly report documenting tasks, accomplishments, and challenges, submitted regularly for mentor evaluation. Required Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

Desired Skills

Proficiency working in the Windows PC environment
Proficiency working in a virtual setting using such tools as Google Drive, Google Meets/Zoom, and other collaborative platforms
Knowledge of, or sincere interest in, coastal community resilience and/or fish and wildlife habitats
Knowledge of basic GIS concepts and principles, including data management, geoprocessing and analysis, and cartographic mapping
Working familiarity with Esri’s ArcGIS for Desktop platform (ArcGIS Pro) as well as ArcGIS Online, or, a working familiarity with QGIS
Knowledge of environmental science, coastal hazards, and/or fish and wildlife species
