Job Description

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Tutors support students enrolled in the AVID Program at Asheville Middle School and/or Asheville High School/SILSA (School of Inquiry & Life Sciences at Asheville). UNCA students complete three initial modules of training (paid) before beginning to work with students. Expectations include that you will facilitate a small group of students as they talk about questions related to academics. AVID is an elective class that students enroll in voluntarily. Tutoring takes place during the school day. Several tutors work simultaneously, so carpooling is common. AVID hires college student tutors because near peer connections are proven to motivate younger students to achieve their post high school dreams. Most AVID students are first generation college students.
