This position is open to non-Federal Work Study and Federal Work Study eligible students. Join our team of student docents to assist with our public stargazes at Lookout Observatory, solar observing events, and other astronomy education activities for the community. Training will be provided for all aspects of the position. Basic knowledge of astronomy, either by taking Astronomy 102 or 103, or having an equivalent background in astronomy, is required. Specific duties may include: Welcome visitors to the observatory and direct them to stargazing areas Assist with stargaze setup and preparation Safely operate UNC Asheville’s telescopes and other equipment Communicate with and educate the public on celestial objects, how a telescope works, constellations, and other relevant knowledge Check-in public stargaze attendees Monitor the gate during observatory events to prevent unauthorized vehicles Create viewing playlists for public stargazes Contribute to the development of outreach activities and programming Create social media content related to Lookout activities Regularly monitor Google Calendar communications
